Great work on a small job with brick edging. In and out in a day!

Debby pointed out that the home I moved to this spring had some drainage issues. Alex came over, developed a plan and his team executed it. Would recommend for sure.

Alex was great! My home flooded after the hurricane storm surge and he came same day and dug out draining holes for the yard. I just moved in and was working with limited supplies to clean, Alex saw this and took the extra step to lend me supplies and stuck around to help me empty the heavy water filled shop vac several times. I also have two large dogs that weren’t able to be contained at that time which always makes me nervous when people come by to work, knowing not everyone likes dogs. Alex had no problem with that, my dogs also liked him so much that they got in his truck to try and leave with him.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s the difference between concrete and pavers, and which is better for my project?

Many homeowners assume concrete and pavers serve the same function, but they’re quite different. Concrete is poured and then shaped and finished in place, while pavers are individual units laid in patterns. Pavers tend to be more flexible and resistant to cracking over time, which is ideal in the shifting soil common in the Lowcountry. Concrete, however, may be more cost-effective for large surfaces. Lowcountry Hardscapes helps clients assess traffic, drainage, aesthetics, and budget to make the right decision for their project.

  • How do you handle drainage when installing patios and walkways?

Drainage is one of the most overlooked yet critical elements in hardscape design. Improper drainage can lead to pooling, erosion, or damage to foundations. Lowcountry Hardscapes designs all projects with slope and water flow in mind. We incorporate French drains, permeable pavers, or grading solutions when necessary to ensure your new installation manages water efficiently without compromising structural integrity or aesthetics.

  • Can I install hardscape features like fire pits or outdoor kitchens on existing concrete?

Yes, but with conditions. Not all existing concrete is suitable to support additional structures. We assess the condition, thickness, and stability of your current surface. In many cases, reinforcement or new concrete pads are recommended to ensure safety and longevity. Our team at Lowcountry Hardscapes will walk you through the options, so you're not unknowingly building on an unstable foundation.

  • How long does it take to install a patio or driveway from start to finish?

While timelines vary by project size and complexity, most installations take 3–10 days. That includes site prep, forming, pouring, curing, and clean-up. Weather and permitting can also affect duration. We provide a clear timeline up front and keep clients informed throughout the process. Unlike some contractors, we don’t cut corners to save time—we follow each step meticulously to ensure lasting results.

  • What kind of maintenance is required for stamped concrete or pavers?

Both stamped concrete and pavers are relatively low-maintenance, but not maintenance-free. Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2–3 years to protect color and finish. Pavers may require occasional sand refilling and weed control. Lowcountry Hardscapes offers annual maintenance services to keep surfaces looking sharp and functioning correctly, especially in humid South Carolina conditions where algae and mildew can be a problem.

  • What permits or approvals are required for hardscape work in North Charleston?

Permit requirements vary depending on the scope of the project and local zoning laws. Projects like driveways or structures near property lines may need municipal approval. Lowcountry Hardscapes helps clients navigate the permitting process, coordinates with local authorities, and ensures every installation complies with building codes and HOA guidelines when applicable.

  • How do you ensure the longevity of your hardscape installations?

We begin with proper excavation and a compacted base to support the surface and prevent shifting. Our materials are industry-grade, and we apply proven techniques like edge restraints, geo-fabric layers, and sealants. We also educate homeowners on care and offer optional maintenance services. With these practices, our work often exceeds expected lifespans—even in challenging climates.

  • Are there eco-friendly or permeable options for hardscaping?

Absolutely. Lowcountry Hardscapes offers permeable paver systems and eco-friendly materials that reduce runoff and promote groundwater recharge. These are ideal for environmentally conscious clients or those dealing with flooding or drainage issues. Permeable pavers can even help meet local stormwater management regulations. We’re happy to explain the benefits and show real-life applications.

  • How does weather affect installation and curing?

South Carolina’s humidity and temperature swings can impact curing time and material behavior. We avoid pouring concrete on rainy days or during extreme heat. Proper timing ensures your installation sets correctly and avoids surface defects like spalling or uneven color. Our crews monitor weather closely and reschedule if conditions aren’t ideal—because rushing an installation leads to subpar results.

  • What’s the process like from first consultation to project completion?

We begin with a free, on-site consultation to evaluate your space and listen to your needs. Then we provide a detailed quote and timeline. Once approved, we handle prep, permits, materials, installation, and final inspection. We maintain open communication throughout so there are no surprises. After completion, we offer follow-up support to ensure your satisfaction.
